Match Trivia

The game between these two teams on the Gregory Ground Lenton this afternoon, had evidently been looking forward to with a considerable amount of interest, and in spite of the counter attraction of Trent Bridge there was a good gate, and the company were of the class generally described by the somewhat hackneyed phrase very select. Play was commenced at 20 minutes to three, McBain kicking off towards the Lenton goal, slightly favoured by the high wind that was blowing. On settling down the visitors initiated the offensive tactics, and secured a couple of corners. The Forrest then flattered their supporters, and more than once it looked as though the Rangers goal would be reduced, especially from a header by Jeacock. A rattling run by the Scotch front rank was finished by Barclay shooting hard and striking one of the uprights, and Hill had to clear once or twice, besides other shots which went over the crossbar. Principally through the agency of Jackson and Harker, the Forrest were able to retaliate, and affairs were lively for a minute or two in front of the Rangers goal, but the defence was superb, and eventually the attack ended in the ball being put over the goal line. The Caledonians dashed in again, and Barclay again suffered hard luck, his shot on this occasion striking the crossbar and rebounding into play, while McBain shot over immediately after. Some fairly even play followed, the Foresters right wing eventually forcing a corner, from which a free kick was obtained for ‘hands’ close into goal, but the Scotchmen presented a solid phalanx in front of the goal, and the Foresters had to retire precipitately, McBain leading a dashing raid into their territory, where a corner was obtained. Harker got possession from a head by Hancock, and Lindley being pursuers until he got close up to the Rangers goal, when however he was floored, and thus prevented from shooting. The Foresters made stronghold, but Nicol and the two backs always spoiled them at the last moment, and their forwards getting into position again just about five minutes before the end of the first half, Wyllie drew first blood. In spite of this reverse the Reds were not discouraged, and almost immediately after Tutin equalised. More exciting play followed, on the Rangers goal before the whistle blew, Lindley putting in a splendid long shot, which Nicol had to negotiate. The visitors also attacked again, but no further scoring was done, so that the teams crossed over with the score one goal each. Recommencing, the visitors, by persistent play all round, kept Caborn and Hancock well employed for the first minute or two. Harker changed the venue, but could not pass Kane, and the ball was returned to the Forest quarters where a sharp shot from the left struck Hill’s legs, and a corner resulted. This gave the Forest some difficulty to clear, and when at last the siege was raised it was only momentary, as the Glasgow men were soon back in attacking position again. A nice pass by Jackson to the left and the ball was put across to Harker, who had a neat opening but was offside. Still, the Reds were not driven back, and Lindley had a try along the ground, but Nicol picked up and threw away. McBain and Wyllie made a short incursion, and were exceedingly troublesome to the backs, but the rest of their comrades were not up, with the results that the ball was driven back, and the Foresters went in for a prolonged attack. Some smart and tricky play by Lindley enabled Tutin to put in a very difficult shot, but Nicol cleared. Then followed a corner and Tutin shot at Nicol again, without, however being able to beat the Scotch custodian. After a short interval another corner resulted to the Reds, but it was easily cleared, and the game became more even. Gradually the Reds took a good lead, Jackson and Harker both got close in, but were encumbered by the backs, and a corner was all that could be gained. From the flag-kick the ball was put outside. Lindley and Jackson both had shots, which Nicol repelled and a fourth corner was also neutralised. A beautiful combined run by the Rangers five looked exceedingly like producing a tangible result, but Hancock kicked over his own lines. From the corner a free kick was given for ‘hands’ quite close in, but after half a minute’s suspense for the Forest supporters the ball was got safely into midfield once more. The visitors however, returned and Smith was prominent in the defence, heading and kicking away grandly, At the other end Jackson got one in just a trifle wide, and from a free kick Barclay headed one into the Forest goal, but Hill fisted away. Tutin had another attempt to lower the Glasgow colours at the finish of a good run by Jackson and Lindley, and immediately after Caborn put the ball to Lindley, who passed grandly to Tutin, and the latter scored a second goal for the Forest amidst loud cheers. The visitors made a determined effort to equalise, but the Foresters quickly retaliated, and they had quite as much of the game as their opponents up to the close, Wyllie scored again for the Rangers, but he was ruled offside, and the game ended in a win for the Forest by two goals to one
