Match Trivia
This tie, which roved the most closely contested of the undecided rounds for the Glasgow Challenge Cup, came of on the ground of the Volunteers, Cathkin Park, in presence of about 2000 spectators, and ended in a draw with two goals each. The weather was very fine, and the ground in good order. The strangers having lost the toss kicked off with a slight wind in their favour, and for a few seconds the ball was kept in midfield till Thomson, getting it in a good position worked it well down on the Rangers backs and made a fast shot at the goal, which Nicol had just time to punt out. The kick out did not relieve matters much as the goal was again besieged; but by and bye the Rangers cleared their lines, and a nice piece of dribbling by White and Brand came very near scoring, the ball being shot over the bar, when a good chance was lost, as the keeper was enticed away from his goal at the time. No goals were scored in the first half. During the earliest stages of the second round the Rangers played best, and scored a couple of goals in very good style. The Volunteers were somewhat unlucky in their efforts to force the Rangers lines, and it looked at one time as if the strangers were going to win, when the 3rd L.R.V. forwards whom out of the Rangers backs and goalkeeper, scored their first goal out of a scrimmage, had again and again repulsed. After this the play became more lively than before, and the home eleven exerted themselves gamely to save defeat and at length succeeded just in the nick of time, in wakening up and finishing by sending the bal through for a second time, thus equalising the tie. The whistle sounded a minute or so afterwards. The Rangers had a slight rearrangement of their team from that which met the Partick Thistle the previous Saturday, while the Volunteers had two-second eleven men.
