Match Trivia

The Scotchmen opposed Bolton Wanderers on the ground of the Lancashire club and the weather being very fine, there was an attendance of 6,000 spectators. The home team secured the return of Struthers besides their latest importation Brogan from Heart of Midlothian and another Scotchman had to meet five of their own clansmen. The ground was cut up through recent games, but a brilliant exhibition was made though the Wanderers had the best of the game being unsteady in their shots at goal, and Struthers in the right wing is not a success. The home team had to face a strong sun in the first half and Glasgow kicked off at 10 past 3 o’clock. The Scotch goal was at once assailed but Duncan relieved and then Gossland affected a clever run for the Rangers McKiernan this time coming to the Wanderers rescue. Brogan afterwards made a quick excursion into the Scotch half and Steel received the ball in nice time, but he shot over the ball. McIntyre next stopped another onslaught on his headquarters, and for sometime play was pretty close to the Scotch goal. At last a relief was obtained Pringle getting an opportunity at the opposite end shot wide and hands for the Wanderers ensued. Powell took the kick and dropped the leather in the very mouth of the Scotch goal but the agility of the goalkeeper ably seconded by Reid and Hamilton transferred play to the centre. Davenport returned with a shot at goal but Thomson and Gossland now brought the ball to the Wanderers end but Davenport baffled Gossland and he screwed the ball harmlessly over the lines. After another spell of battering at the Scotch goal, which was not successful in notching any points, Pringle rushed off with the ball against Heggie and it rebounded dangerously into goal but Pringle shot wide. Then Thomson and Heggie caused Hay to kick out but Chalmers immediately after hugged the ball on the ground before the posts and only by remarkable fortune got rid of his burden by throwing it outside the posts. A little later the Rangers missed a grand chance of scoring as after a scrimmage Thomson got the ball opposite Hay without any intervening Boltonian but McKiernan rushed up, and while the Scotch centre was steadying for his shot the Bolton back tipped it out of his reach. Just before halftime however Cameron delivered the ball into the Wanderers goal quarter and Thomson shot it past Hay. The recommencement had barely been effected when Brogan handed the ball and thus spoiled a grand chance of making matters even. The Scotchmen followed this by a brisk fusillade on the Wanderers goal but their headquarters in turn suffered and through successive mistakes by Cameron and McHardy, Brogan got the first goal for Bolton. After this the Scotchmen found the Bolton goalkeeper plenty to do as Brogan got hurt but still they did not score again and the match terminated in a draw one goal each
