Match Trivia
The first meeting of these clubs was the means of attracting nearly 5000 spectators to Kinning Park. In both teams there are one or two alterations compared with last year but the new players acquitted themselves well and the game after a spirited contest in favour of the Rangers by two goals to one. There was scarcely a breath of wind and as both teams played with determination the ball travelled rapidly from one end of the field to the other. The Rangers started the game and from a ‘foul’ against a Vale man the ball was carried in front of the strangers posts where a determined scrimmage was fought. The Vale ultimately got clear and from this to the end of the first half towards the close of which the visitors scored a goal the play was pretty equal. Both goalkeepers were frequently called upon to save their charges and on several occasions goals were almost scored by both sides. Inglis, McGregor and Cameron made repeated attempts on behalf of the Rangers but the splendid back play of Forbes proved of great services to his team on such occasions while Duncan and Hart for the Rangers stopped dangerous runs by Johnstone and Brown. On starting the game at half time the Rangers at once assumed the aggressive and in a few minutes a well directed shot by Cameron took effect. The game being thus equal the players redoubled their efforts to score the winning point. After a rush by the Vale forwards their goalkeeper only managed to avert the downfall of his goal a second time and in doing so had to give the Rangers a corner kick. The local men continued to have fully the best of the play and one of a number of shots by Inglis evaded the goalkeeper and gave the Rangers second goal. No more scoring took place. The play till the close was rather exciting Inglis, Cameron and McGregor worked hard to increase their score but without success. The Vale forwards were not idle and playing better together towards the close made several inroads into the Rangers ground. The home backs however were always in their places and supported by the clever goalkeeping of Chalmers the Vale had to submit to a defeat. The feature of the play was undoubtedly the grand defence shown by Forbes of the Vale. The forwards however played rather slackly at times. The Rangers forwards on the other had played well together and were ably supported by the backs and halfbacks
