Match Trivia
This was the principal match in Glasgow on Saturday the celebrated Birmingham team appearing at Kinning Park for the first time this season. The day was beautifully fine by and not fewer than 5000 spectators assembled by the reputation of the Aston Villa. The Rangers lost the toss but they were not put to much disadvantage, as there was no wind to speak of. Inglis started the ball and with a pass or two it went over the English lines. The kick off did not travel far and the Rangers immediately got a corner kick, which produced another. From the second, which Gossland nicely placed, McHardy headed the first goal for the Glasgow club exactly two minutes from the start. The Rangers colours were next assailed a sharp shot by Hunter going into Gillespie’s hands. The same player in about ten minutes tried to score but though his effort was a close one he failed. After nearly 20 minutes very even play the Rangers pressed the Birmingham club and Mason had to clear his goal several times. Pringle with a long shot centre and with a true aim put the ball hard into goal. Mason struck it out but Hamilton being in the act of charging the goalkeeper was struck in the head by the ball, which bounded through, the Rangers thus obtaining a second goal after twenty minutes play. The back play of the home team was too good for the Brums who though they passed well could rarely break through the opposing defence and did not get any opportunities at the Rangers goal. The weakest point in the Birmingham team seemed to be the halfbacks who could not stay the clever front division of the Rangers who by judicious passing had several attempts at home. Once Inglis should have scored the goal at his mercy but his effort was a hopeless failure. As length however with five minutes of time a sharp low shot by Gossland beat Mason and a third point fell to the Rangers. Just on halftime and after some very exciting play a corner kick came to the Rangers but nothing was gained by it and ends were changed with the score three goals in favour of the Rangers. After a short interval the ball was set in motion again and the Birmingham team evidently aware their reputation was at stake put in a lot of hard work. After ten minutes hard and interesting play in which both teams showed well Davis scored a goal. Stung at this the Rangers braced up and Inglis got the ball which he passed cleverly to Pringle who shot it between the posts two minutes after the Villa had scored their first and only point. A plea of offside was raised but the referee did not give in. The play from this to the close was even and very interesting rapid raids being made by each sides but as there was no further scoring the game ended in favour of the Rangers by four goals to one. Both teams met in the Athole Arms after the match and under the presidency of Mr Goudie spent a very pleasant evening.
