Match Trivia
This, the first meeting of the above teams after an interval of fully a year, took place on the ground of the former and ended in favour of the Volunteers by three goals to none. Heavy rain fell nearly all the time the game lasted and rendered matters very uncomfortable both for players and spectators. The defeated team played without the services of Gillespie all the time the game lasted which was an hour. The ground was anything but comfortable for playing upon with success and falls were frequent. The Volunteers somehow or other managed to keep their feet best possibly owing to the fact of being used to the ground. Heggie who is a capital man at his recognised place, made a very poor goalkeeper and the want of Gillespie was severely felt by the Rangers. They had the wind in their favour during the first round and frequently got very close on their opponents lines but the fine back play of the Volunteers saved the goal on several occasions. The 3rd L.R.V. had also some very nice runs by McLachlan and McIntyre but no scoring occurred. Ends were then changed and some capital passing and dribbling ensured on both sides. The Volunteers at length prevailed and after a nice passing run by Marshall, Scobbie and McIntyre the latter made a very neat goal for his side. After the ball had been started from midfield once more the Rangers made a close run up to the 3rd L.R.V. goal, led on by Inglis; but the latter lost a fine chance by sending the leather past the left goal post. The kick out in front of goal was followed by a hard scrimmage and Lang succeeded in getting clear with Marshall in close attendance and the pair made straight for the Rangers goal. McIntyre on behalf of the defenders missed his kick and thus left the goal open for a successful attack and McLachlan having the ball passed to him by Lang made a second record for the Volunteers with a long shot – the leather just touching the keepers fingers before gliding under the bar. The play after this was pretty even for some time till the 3rd L.R.V. forwards came away down the field and a third goal was made out of a scrimmage – the game ending shortly thereafter in favour of the Volunteers by three goals to none.
