Match Trivia
On Saturday afternoon the concluding game of the cup-tie between these two clubs was played off on Kinning Park – the ground of the former. So much interested was taken in this match that despite the heavy rain and cold wind nearly a thousand spectators were present who watched the game throughout with the keenest interest. The ground was in very fair condition and a few minutes before three the ball was set in motion by the South Western and quickly carried in front of the Rangers goal only however to be sent back to midfield. The play for the next fifteen minutes was confined to the centre, but afterwards the Rangers forwards managed to get the ball in front of their opponent’s goals where Christie passed it to Hill who sent it smartly between the posts. The ball was again kick off and quickly carried from goal to goal though the greater part of the time it remained in South Western territory. About twenty-five minutes after play began the second goal for the Rangers was cleverly scored by McFarlane. But when the leather was again set in motion the South Western made a determined effort to retrieve their position and getting the ball well in front of the local posts tried hard to score but were unsuccessful. Though they afterwards got a corner kick, it passed off without any result. Pringle then got on the ball and carried it well up the field only however to be stopped by the South Western backs, but the Rangers forwards again got upon the leather and Hill with a good shot passed it between the posts. Three goals to none. It was now half time and the South Western had failed to score and their chances of success hopeless. No time was lost and the Rangers got off with a dash and carried the ball right up to the South Western goal and put it through, but this goal was disallowed. When the leather was again started a smart scrimmage took place in front of the local posts but the ball was cleverly sent out by Gillespie. The Rangers forwards then got it well down on the South Western fortress and Young put the ball through once more. Nothing of importance took place after this and the game ended in favour of the Rangers by four goals to none. Both teams played well considering the weather, the Rangers backs doing good service during the game. This was the replayed match following the upheld protest by South Western from the original game on 3rd December
