Match Trivia
The well known Glasgow Rangers and the Cricket and Football Club having arranged a to meet at the Holm Quarry on Wednesday evening, a large number of football admirers attended to witness the game, which proved one of the best of the season. Both teams were good representatives of their respective clubs – though Harrison of the Portland FC, played for the Rangers in place of P Campbell who was absent. The cricket team won the toss, and got the advantage of playing with the wind, which blew pretty strongly, in the one direction during the game and within a minute or so scored a goal. During the first half the ball was mostly confined to Rangers ground, and many close scrimmage and near shots at the goal took place – once, indeed goal being given by one umpire and referred to the referee, who declined to decide the point. The Rangers however managed a break way now and again during this half, and on one of these occasions kicked a goal against the wind. With the change of ends at half time, the Rangers invested their opponents goal which however was so well defended by the backs and goalkeeper (Inglis), notwithstanding the numerous assaults made upon it, only one goal was obtained. The game ended Rangers 2 goals K C & F C 1 goal and 1 disputed. The play all round was much appreciated by the spectators most of whom were highly pleased with the game and its result. The back play of Vallance (the captain of the Rangers), Goudie (who played forward for the first time this season this season in a match), and Inglis splendid goalkeeping, were perhaps the chief features of the game
