Rangers had to go right to the last day before edging out Hearts by two points.
Both teams scored 92 goals and conceded 51 ... but Rangers were champions with 50 points to Hearts' 48.
Yet the season had started badly-with only one win in the first five games, home points being dropped with draws against Third Lanark and Celtic and then a home defeat against Dundee and an away beating against Airdrie.
But 11 wins and three draws in the next 14 games put Rangers right back in the challenge. They had recruited lan McMillan from Airdrie by this time and he scored twice in his debut in an exciting 4-4 draw at Ibrox.
Best wins were 7-1 away against Dunfermline and 6-3 at home against Queen of the South.
Rangers won 21 of their 34 games, lost five and drew eight.
Two great Rangers, Billy Simpson and Johnny Hubbard, left Rangers after years of superb service.
