Match Trivia

There was an immense gathering of spectators on Hampden Park and the surrounding grounds last night to witness the final tie between the Rangers and Vale of Leven clubs for this beautiful Cup. It was evident from the excited demeanour of many of those present that feeling ran pretty high. The Rangers lost the toss and had to defend the eastern goal. The setting sun beating on their faces brightly. Vallance kicked off and on the return of the ball the forwards of the Vale of Leven made a combined rush at the Rangers goal and round about it they played for about two minutes. To the astonishment of all the ball was swiftly sent between the home players post and this so early in the game did not augur well for the defensive play of the Rangers. Smarting under this defeat the Glasgow Club by good passing and dodging worked the ball up to the vicinity of the strangers goal where hands were given against the latter. But the Rangers could not score and also failed immediately after though the ball was brought close to the Vale posts by McQuarrie a young forward of the Rangers. Another splendid run by the home forwards among whom Struthers was prominent placed the stranger’s goal in danger and in a scrimmage hands were again declared against them. McIntyre took the kick for the Rangers and so well did he place the ball that little difficulty was experienced in punting it through the stranger’s goal. At half time no more goals were secured. Immediately on the resumption of the game the Vale player’s shot for the Rangers posts but the goalkeeper sent the ball out. For the next fifteen minutes the game was played on both sides with great determination and judgement but neither team could score. A scrimmage however took place in front of the stranger’s goal and the ball was sent through for the second time amid the greatest excitement among the onlookers. Little needs to be said as to the rest of the play; no more goals were secured and the Rangers won by two goals to one
