Match Trivia
The first meeting of the season between the Rangers and 3rd L.R.V. took place on Kinning Park in presence of about 1000 spectators and contrary to general expectations, ended in favour of the Rangers by the long score of six goals to none, obtained by superior play at all points. The ground was very heavy going and slippery, and the backs on both sides had hard work to get properly on the ball. The Home eleven were successful in winning the toss for choice of ends and had a good breeze in their favour for the first forty-five. The 3rd L.R.V. looked very like scoring a few minutes after they kicked off the ball, and the Rangers backs division had to look active; but the Rangers soon turned the tables on them and after getting a corner kick and several shies at their opponents goal, made the first points from a combined run on the right - Heggie being last on the ball. The Volunteers had to kick off a second time and kept their own for a bit with the wind in their teeth, but the forward combination of the Rangers was too good for the 3rd Lanark backs and before halftime was announced the Rangers were three goals ahead. In the second round the 3rd L.R.V. played up very well for a time and looked like scoring from several very plucky runs both from the right and left wings, but they soon fell off in their attack, and as the younger club were in rare fettle and the forwards keeping their feet astonishingly well run after run was made up to the strangers goal where a fourth point was scored out of a scrimmage, after the ball had been brought up by Heggie and Buchanan. After some more hard play, chiefly in volunteer’s territory a dashing run as made by Buchanan who scored goal No.5. After this the 3rd L.R.V. from the kick off got well up the field, but the forwards were tackled by the Rangers’ backs and the scene of operations being again transferred to the Volunteers territory a sixth goal was put to the credit of the Rangers by Heggie. The remainder of the game was more evenly contested but the 3rd L.R.V. failed to get a single point and were defeated by the long score of half a dozen goals to none.
