Match Trivia

This match, which was naturally looked upon as the leading one in the city on Saturday, attracted a large gathering to Kinning Park, but it proved the most disappointing of any played in Glasgow for a long time. The Strangers, in fact made a poor show, and as the Rangers were in ‘demon’ form, they drove their opponents before them like ninepins, and won by the extraordinary score of twelve goals to two. The London team, a pretty fair lot in front were miserably represented at back and goal and from the first five minutes never were in it. The goalkeeper, in fact, was about the poorest specimen of a fortress defender ever seen at Kinning Park; and some of the spectators were ungallant enough to assert that he was the best man on the field for the Rangers. The strangers won the toss, and during the first round played with the wind, which was not very strong, against them. The play had not gone very far when it became apparent that the visitors were going to have it hot as after a feeble defence of the backs from a neat run by the Rangers left wing Heggie scored a couple of goals in about ten minutes, and a third was soon registered by McKenzie. After the kick-off from the centre the London men played up a little better and Mailey, who showed excellent speed, got close on the Rangers goal but his shot was cleverly diverted by Chalmers. After the kick-out Buchanan and Pringle added a fourth between them, and by and by other two goals were got for the Glasgow team from scrimmages. Just before halftime, however the London Scottish warmed up a little and the ball being run down to the Rangers goal by Stirling, Keay, and Fry, was neatly centred and goaled by the former. When ends were changed the game was six goals to one in favour of the home team. For some time after the ball was again started the Rangers forwards had lots of shots at the strangers goal but they were carelessly aimed, and the ball went past the posts. In a scrimmage however the goalkeeper in trying to chuck the ball away sent it through his own goal amid much laughter. This gave the Rangers seven goals, and the first half average was actually kept up to the end. In a little one of the halfbacks of the Rangers scored a goal, and other three came from the feet of Gow, Peacock and Buchanan in rapid succession. In turn the London men had a run up to the Rangers posts and Fry cleared the ball away from Hume, and sent it through. Time was now all but up and just a second or so before the whistle was sounded a fine goal was scored by Pringle, after a well-placed corner-flag kick, the Rangers thus winning by the big score of twelve goals to two.
