Match Trivia
Played at Ibrox Park, Govan before 5000 spectators. With the exception of the wind, which came rather strong from the southwest, the weather was all that could be desired for the event. Both teams were well represented and turned out, nearly at full strength. The Rangers were without Barker, while the Athletic were minus Blessington. Losing the toss the Rangers kicked off against the wind, Bruce and Turnbull got off on the run and passed, but Stevenson spoiled their effort. Play was transferred to the Rangers end where Henderson had a try, which went over the bar. J McPherson got possession with the goal kick and made rare progress. He was getting nicely settled when he as tripped up, the free kick came to nothing. The Athletics, aided by the wind, took up the running, and thrice in succession they obtained corner kicks, all of which were fruitless, a free kick for tripping by the Athletics again reprieved the pressure on the Rangers goal. The Athletic meant scoring, however and from a smart run on the left H McQueen sent in a beauty, which had the desired effect. McLeod bustling Haddow through the goal with the ball in his hands. This reverse made the Rangers play up, and soon they had the ball over the Athletics lines. From a run by J McPherson and Turnbull, McCartney was safely passed, and Turnbull sent the ball well across the goalmouth D McPherson, who was lying handily, easily equalised with a swift shot. Open play followed, each goal being assailed in turn. Towards the close of this period Henderson scored a second goal for the Athletics, Haddow failing to reach the ball. Halftime result Leith Athletic 2 goals; Rangers 1 goal. Immediately on starting the second half, the Rangers got a free kick, Laing who kicked off for the Athletics, contrary to rule, sending the ball back instead of forward. With the wind in their favour the Rangers now took up the running with a vengeance. They pressed Burnside severly, and at last McInnes equalised with a long swift shot. Keeping at it the same player added a third goal for the Rangers two minutes later. The Athletics after this strove hard to regain lost ground, but all their efforts were unavailing. The defence of the Rangers was not to be broken down. Towards the close they gave Haddow a little to do, but he proved equal to all the calls made on him. No further scoring took place. The game throughout was hotly contested and thoroughly interesting. For the Rangers the nest men were Haddow, Drummond, Mitchell, J McPherson and McInnes; and for the Athletics Burnside, W Anderson, M McQueen, McLeod and H McQueen. Final result Rangers 3 goals; Leith Athletic 2 goals.
