Match Trivia
There was fully 16,000 spectators at New Hampden the occasion of the return League match between these old rivals. There was a thick fog during the game, which nevertheless was finished. The ground was still somewhat soft. Play rules brisk at the start, both goals running narrow escapes in the first few minutes. Dickie saved grandly on several occasions he having more work to do in the early stages than Skene, who however was by no means idle. Brilliant forward play by the Rangers brought them into close quarters with Skene, who was beaten shortly after the start. Continuing to press hard, the visitors scored again. After this the play became more even, the forward work of the Queen’s troubling the Rangers backs considerably. A short tussle ensured at the Rangers goal, and the referee signalled for a free kick against them. The Queen’s however continued to play and scored. The goal was allowed much to the consternation of the Rangers, who held that the referee had cried. Play was very fast, and keen to the interval, without leaving the field for the customary interval, play was resumed. The Queen’s early indicated that they were determined to equalise, and this they did after some haphazard play by the Rangers backs. Now on equality, and with the Rangers a man short – Robertson had to retire for a time suffering from an injured left thigh – the home ream set up a very hot pace. The visitors although handicapped played up grandly, and Drummond, who received a clever pass from Gibson dribbled for a few yards and letting go for goal, scored from fully 20 yards range. Skene being unable to attempt to save owing to his being deceived by the increasing fog. Strenuous play ruled to the finish the Rangers having Robertson out again in the closing minutes. Result – Rangers 3 goals: Queen’s Park 2 goals. The total drawing amounted to £415, of which £45 came from the stand
