Match Trivia

In aid of the unemployed weavers in Newmilns, this match was played in the ground of the Portland in presence of a large number of spectators, and resulted, after a hard game in favour of the Rangers by four goals to none. The Kilmarnock team, having to play against a string wind had hot work during the first half. For the first quarter the Rangers pressed their opponents severely, until the Kilmarnock forwards passing the ball to each other most unselfishly made several inroads into the Rangers territory conspicuous amongst them being Harrison and Sinclair, the two wing players the former giving Vallance trouble to keep him in check. However the Rangers forwards were not to be denied, and from a corner kick by Ricketts, Watson headed the ball through. After about twenty minutes more play a second goal was taken off a fine run by P Campbell, McNeil giving the ball the final kick. This made matters look serious for the Kilmarnock, who made desperate efforts to score, and which they almost succeeded in doing from the best run of the day by Harrison, who passed to Kennedy, the latter shooting fair into goal, Watt struck the ball out, but rebounding off some of the players it would have gone through but for the expertness of Gillespie who kicked just on the line. This piece of play was greatly applauded by the onlookers. At change of ends the game became very fast and some splendid play was exhibited by both teams, P Campbell, McNeil and Marshall passing to each other in grand style lowered the colours of the Kilmarnock for the third time. At this stage of the game a Kilmarnock forward (J Walker) retired hurt from a kick by one of his own club. The Kilmarnock forwards followed up the kick off well, and kept the ball for some time dangerously near the Rangers goal, but to no effect for just as Walker was going to kick for goal Vallance came to the rescue and sent the ball flying down the field, only to be returned to Harrison who made a rather wild shot. Sinclair shortly after this came away in grand style but Gillespie and W B Johnstone who were in rare fettle collared him in time, and the ball went rolling into touch. Shortly after this a corner kick fell to the Kilmarnock but Gillespie headed it over the bar. Ten minutes before time a free kick fell to the Rangers which was so well directed by Gillespie that James Campbell scored the fourth goal, and thus a pleasant game resulted in favour of the Rangers as stated. Several of the Kilmarnock team showed up splendidly, Harrison, Sinclair, Walker, Kennedy and Mair showed speed and endurance, while Vallance and Armour back played well, McLelland at goal played creditably and saved his goal in fine style. The Rangers forwards all played well together, while the back play of WB Johnstone and Gillespie was perfection. Tom Vallance was as usual a lost in himself, his splendid long shots being much admired and applauded by the onlookers. Both teams during the evening were entertained to dinner when a most enjoyable hour was spent. Provost Paterson of Newmilns was pleasant and thanked the players for their kindness in playing for such a laudable object. It is expected the about £25 will be handed over by the committee to aid the object for which this match was got up
