Match Trivia
A grand football tournament took place yesterday on the recreation ground of the Glasgow University Athletic Club in presence of about 10,000 spectators, of whom 1100 were accommodated at one shilling each on the eastern stand and 300 upon the western. The sun was very hot and the ground hard, which circumstance told against scientific football. The programme was not carried out in its integrity, inasmuch as Renton had to telegraphed that the majority of their players could not get away from their work. Their place was therefore taken by the Third Lanark, who were pitted against the Rangers, whilst the Queen’s Park and Heart of Midlothian were drawn against each other. The team of the Queen’s Park, like hord, Aberdeen Administration during the Crimean War, was composed of ‘all the talents’, G Hector of Battlefield, J McPherson of Cowlairs, W Paul of Partick Thistle, assisting in the forward division. The Rangers, on the other had, were strengthened by J Forbes of the Vale of Leven and J Munro of Abercorn; and the Volunteers by McKenzie of Renton at halfback. The only genuine club represention was that of the Heart of Midlothian, who played their ordinary eleven. At ten minutes past one the game was commenced between the Edinburgh club and the Queen’s Park, which Queen’s Park won 4 goals to one. The ground was next occupied by the Third Lanark and the Rangers; the result being one goal to nil in favour of the ‘warriors’
