Match Trivia
At Tynecastle, Edinburgh, in fine weather, and before a large gathering. The Hearts won the toss, and the Rangers started towards the north goal. The Rangers were soon at the Hearts end, but a rush by Baird and Scott was stopped by the backs, and Dick was next prominent. Fine passing by the Rangers forwards gave the Hearts some trouble. The game was fast, and rather in favour of the Rangers, though the Hearts had a good look in, but Smith was a stumbling block they could not get over. A foul against the Hearts was taken by McCreadie, and some ground gained by this was neutralised, as another foul was given against the Rangers, and the ball was sent by. Open though bright, play ensured, and Mitchell held the opposing wing in grand style. The Hearts narrowly escaped getting a goal, Baird just sending the ball wide. A most vigorous attack was made by the Hearts, but on each occasion the ball went outside. At this period the Hearts were playing a most eager game, and had they been less anxious would doubtless have scored. The Rangers forwards again got off, but were soon sent back by the rear division of the Hearts. Long shooting and plat at misfiled continued for a time, and the Hearts did not take due advantage of the wind, which though slight was in their favour. A tussle between Baird and Marshall near to the Rangers goal looked rather dangerous, but the attempt failed, and once more the Rangers got down the field, and Kerr sent in a hot shot, which Hamilton was fortunate in stopping. The home team taxed the Rangers defence to the utmost, bur their backs division were very reliable. At length Ross discovered an opening, and taking advantage he scored with a grand shot. The Hearts elated by this kept up a hot fire at the Rangers posts, but the latter’s forwards broke away, and Steel and Kerr were prominent with a fine run, the Latter being successful in equalising. After crossing over the Rangers had much the best of the game, and again and again pressed hard, but the defence of the Hearts was splendid. After a run by the home forwards the Rangers got off with a rush, and owing to some misunderstanding between Adams and Begbie a long slow shot from Steel went between the posts. Till the finish of the game the Hearts tried hard to redeem themselves, but were unable to do so, and the game thus resulted – Rangers 2 goals: Heart of Midlothian 1 goal
