Match Trivia
Rangers spent a day in Forfarshire, prior to their ‘friendly’ with Forfar Athletic in the evening. The Glasgow players were taken on a charabanc trip round and about, prior to proceeding to Cortachy Castle, the seat of the Earl of Airlie. After a stroll through the grounds, the ‘Light Blues’ moved into Kirriemuir, where they saw ‘A window in Thrums’. At Glamis Castle the party were received by the Earl of Strathmore and shown over the old building and policies. His lordship entertained the players and officials to tea. At the match, played on Station Park, included amongst the 3000 people present was the Earl of Strathmore. All were delighted with the splendid exhibition of football given by the Glasgow side. Yet Forfar opened the scoring, Langlands landing one home from far out. Rangers replied as if they meant something. Which was the case – Tommy Cairns equalised with a very finely taken goal. Turned round, the ‘Light Blues’ pushed their noses in front. Archibald getting off, beat a trio of ‘Forfarians’, slipped the ball to McDonald, who in turn transferred to Craig, with those close-in shot Bruce hadn’t the ghost of a chance. A third Rangers’ goal followed – one of those low Meiklejohn scorchers we hear and read so much about up here. Then the League champions set out to show us how to do it – their footwork was cleverness itself. But the locals were not done with. Towards the close they came away with a rare burst, and Robb was completely beaten by McLean’s great shot. McDonald made a right good substitute for Andrew Cunningham, and Curran the Irish back, did well what he got to do. It was a most enjoyable game in every respect
