Match Trivia

In the contest for the supremacy in the league ladder these two clubs met at Boghead. Dumbarton when the spectators were treated to one of the fastest played games of the season. Prior to Saturday the Rangers topped the league with six points to their credit, and they were closely followed by Dumbarton with five points. When H McCreadie kicked off for the Rangers the ropes were lined with the admirers of both teams. The Rangers at once began to force the pace by a series of rushes, but they were only adopting a policy in which Dumbarton is proficient. With the game only a few minutes gone A McCreadie received an accidental kick from Bell, and although he remained playing for the first half he was practically of no use to his side. The Rangers manfully struggled to score but try as they would the ball would not pass McLeod. The struggle was now carried to the Rangers territory, and in a few minutes Reid got beat by Bell; to him also were Dumbarton indebted for their second point, Mair following immediately with a short swift kick which caused Reid to be defeated for a third time. Alternate rushes were now made by both teams, and the goalkeepers had their work cut out for them. Both however, proved equal to the occasion till halftime was sounded. The Rangers again began the pressing but they met with a stubborn defence from McLeod. McPherson had several corners, but neither were productive of any good, Dumbarton now began to play a splendid game, and the right wingers Galbraith and Taylor, were showing themselves too many for their opposing men, and one of them – Mitchell – in the height of the moment got a hold of Taylor, and both players getting together, it looked as if there was to be a stand-up fight. After the squabble the Rangers got a foul near to the goalposts, which was passed to Hislop, who had the credit of turning the opportunity to a goal – first point. Dumbarton now made a rush on Reid, and the ball was again through. The game was kept up at a high pace till the finish, but the Dumbarton had the best of the play towards the close, their combination being much superior to that of the Rangers, who evidently got flunked at playing losing game. At the finish both teams were fagged out. Result – Dumbarton five, Rangers one
