Match Trivia
The first tie for possession of this handsome trophy presently held by the Rangers took place on the ground of the Queen’s Park (kindly put at the disposal of the Charity Committee for the occasion) and resulted in favour of the Rangers by three goals to one, after a very exciting game. The afternoon was in every way favourable for the game and two or three thousands of spectators attended. The contest was started by the Rangers captain, who had lost the toss, kicking off towards the upper end of the field. There was no wind to interfere with the play and the only advantage that the strangers had lay in the ground. The kick off was smartly followed up and it took the Rangers backs hard work to keep the Dumbarton forwards out of their territory. The first corner flag kick was got by Dumbarton in consequence of T Vallance kicking out, but no advantage was gained in the subsequent scrimmage, although the ball went close past the goal post. After a good deal of ‘heading’ and ‘breasting’ was an occasional run on both sides the Dumbarton team managed to score a capital goal – Lang kicking the ball through while Lindsay charged the keeper as he was attempting to ward off he shot. Not long after the ball was again started Struthers lost a fine chance to score by missing the ball; but near the close of the first round he made ample amends by getting away in company with Hill and scoring the first goal for his side. ‘Off side’ was claimed but not allowed. Ends were mow changed leaving the two teams equal but with the advantage of ground possessed by their opponents in the first half the Rangers soon distance them in goal taking. Goal No. 2 was taken in a hot scrimmage the ball being forced under after the Dumbarton goalkeeper made a gallant attempt to save his charge. After this the Dumbarton men bore down on their opponents goal and the ball was all but under when the Rangers captain kicked over the lines for safety. The corner flag kick was finely taken and in the scrimmage, which ensued Gillespie, cleared his goal by throwing the leather out. Some even play followed each goal being in turn attacked. The Rangers however came down the field with renewed determination and after some smart passing by McNeil, Pringle and Hill the latter shot the ball under the Dumbarton goal for the third time. Just before the game ended the Strangers made one last effort to score but were unsuccessful Gillespie cleverly dodging Brown and Hartley and getting the ball clear. The game thus ended in favour of the Glasgow team by three goals to one
