Match Trivia

Against the League leaders the Ayr United were unable to field their strongest side, injuries to John Crosbie and Richardson necessitating a reshuffling of the attack, which did not make for strength. But for the miserable weather conditions the attendance of about 9,000 must have been greatly increased. It took the visitors a little under forty minutes to break down the opposition and incidentally open the scoring, and even afterwards the points for Rangers seemed sae. Bowie scored quite neatly after Kerr had conceded a corner. The second point came ten minutes after the restart. Muirhead crashed the ball into the net when Kerr had only partially cleared from Archibald. The winger was responsible for the third and final goal, Cairns nipping up his pass in the goalmouth after Cunningham had missed. Although Ayr put in much neat work in the opening half, and forced quite a number of corners, Lock was invariably quite safe, although had Smith been better supported a different tale might have been told at the interval. Well on in the Second half, Ayr had hard lines in not breaking there ‘duck.’ Agnew striking the crossbar and Lock being lucky to get the tips of his fingers on one from Smith. From goal outward the visitors gave a capital display. Gordon was a tower of strength, Dixon had much to do with the ineffectiveness of Agnew and McCulley, while in the forward division Archibald was a start. He found, however, a stumbling block at times in McCloy, whose defensive work did not suffer in comparison with any of the Rangers’ defence. Cunningham’s shooting was a bit off, but Gillespie saw to it that he did not get a great many chances. Paterson did splendidly on the left, while Cairns and Muirhead gave every support. Kerr had little chance with the goals that beat him, and with regard to the others, McCloy, Gillespie and Smith were prominent. It is a tribute to the Ayr defence or a tribute to Richardson and Crosbie – absent from the team – that Rangers are the only side since September 30 who have prevented Ayr United from scoring?
