Alex Smith (1966 to 1969)
Alex joined Rangers from Dunfermline Athletic in the close season of 1966 for a fee of £55,000, making his debut at Ibrox on 13th August as Hibs were defeated 1-0 in the League Cup. Barcelona hero Dave Smith would make his debut in that same match but, for the avoidance of doubt, the two players were not related.
Alex’s first goal for Rangers came when the two sides met in the return tie at Easter Road.
His debut season, 1966/67, would transpire to be his most prolific spell at Rangers where he netted a credible 23 goals in 55 appearances to finish top scorer at the Club.
It proved to be a trophyless and traumatic one for the Club following defeat to Berwick Rangers in the Scottish Cup, a game which Smith started. He was also in the starting line up for the European Cup Winner’s Cup Final defeat to Bayern Munich later that year.
In all, Alex played 68 times for Rangers scoring 26 goals before moving on in the summer of 1969.
